Effect of Rapid Thawing on Local Frostbite in Rats

Abstract

Recent experiments have indicated that, in contradistinction to some of the views formerly held, rapid thawing may be of value in preventing tissue loss after frostbite.
Our studies report that rapid thawing of frozen feet and tails of 42 rats in water at 42¡ÆC for 15 minutes minimized loss of tissues after immersing into 15¡ÆC salt water for 5 minutes. Spontaneous rewarming in air at room temperature after freezing resulted tissue loss of animals in 86 % of 43 cases.
